Dog fighting

Image
The last post I wrote, the interesting fact mentioned dogfighting rings, well I'm going to get more into detail about that. Dogfighting is a cruel type of "sport" for dogs where they put two dogs that the owners trained to fight for the entertainment of spectators and they usually put bets on which dog will win. Also, the owner of the dog that won, gets a lot of money. Dogfighting is illegal in all 50 states of the United States, so a dog fight would be a crime. Attending a dog fight in all states, but Hawaii and Montana is a felony, too. Sometimes they even use dogs as bait to attract other dogs to fight. The dogs are also trained to attack on command so if a police officer comes near the dogfight, they'll get attacked by the dog. It's so upsetting to know that even though they know it's a horrible, horrible thing to do, they still do it because they know in the end they might have money, even though they know that money is made off the death of a dog. That...

"Dangerous" Dogs

Image
Sure, some dogs can land you in the hospital, but you shouldn't judge them. For example, my friends have and had pit bulls and the only memories they have of them are good (except when they go to the bathroom in the house) and they're one of the most dangerous breeds of dog.  I think all dogs deserve a second chance, I'm saying this from experience, the first time I got bit by a dog it was also a dangerous dog and it bled, but now that breed is one of my favorites.  It's kind of like if a dog had social problems or is unhealthy, it all depends on their past, it all depends if they are trained to attack humans or if they experienced trauma when they were a puppy, so please, don't be too quick to judge a pit bull or any other breed of dog based on what someone told you or your past experience with them. For instance,  A Dog's Way Home is based on a law that Denver, Colorado passed that said pit bulls are not allowed because of an attack that happened on a child, b...

Preparing for a puppy

The first thing you need to do to before your family gets a dog is well deciding what you want, a purebred or a mutt, hypoallergenic, breeder or shelter. To help you decide what breed you want, I will create a list: small apartment= small dog that doesn't need that much exercise, Big yard=big dog that likes to play. TIP: don't get a dog if your family travels a lot and no one can take care of the dog. The next step is to figure out where the dog will be sleeping and buying all the toys and treats. After you figure that out you can move on to the schedule, who will walk the dog how many times a week does he need to be walked, when will you take him to potty, and how many times a day will you feed him and what will you feed him. Finally, you'll be able to decide how you want to train the dog and what do you want the dog to do. But the most important thing is to spend time with your dog and make sure (s)he knows you love him\her and build a good relationship with them. Here...

Mutts vs Purebred

Image
Remember in my first blog post I talked about crossbreeds/mutts, well we're getting back to that now. First I wanted to talk about how some people discriminate mutts because they think purebreds are better. Some people also think they're are unhealthier, sometimes that's true, but sometimes a dog's health all depends on how they're treated before or after they're adopted. If anything a lot of purebreds are unhealthy because if you haven't noticed, puppy mills sell purebreds more often since they're smart and they know they'll sell better. So technically a lot of unhealthy dogs are purebred, but if you look on the other side the majority of abandoned dogs are mutts and it's unhealthy for them if they're abandoned in a bad place. but almost 100% of the time they are abandoned at a kill shelter or on the side of a road so that's not that big of an if because it happens like A LOT. So please if you decide to get a dog, don't jump straight...

Dogs are Incredibly Intelligent and Amazing

Dog in agility competition Here's a cool video of dogs in a n agility competition if you want to watch, just click the link: http://bit.ly/CruftsSub Dogs can do amazing things like did you know that before any humans went to space, dogs were the first living beings to go to space and back and come back alive. They also compete in very challenging competitions like agility competitions, surfing, flyball, and frisbee competitions. Sometimes human sports are turned into dog sports. For example, there's a puppy bowl instead of a super bowl and thousands of people come to watch the dogs compete in challenging competitions. As you can see dogs are much more accomplished than you think.

Working dogs

Police officer training a police dog. On my last blog, we talked about service dogs. Now we're going to talk about working dogs. Working dogs work, some work for police officers and some even help scare away birds in a landing zone for helicopters and planes. In places where there are endangered animal species dog smell animal poop to locate endangered species and save them. Some dogs catch people   who kill animals that are illegal to kill, those people are called poachers, they also sometimes  help  soldiers   fi ght wars. So now you can see that when people say I don't know what I'll do without dogs in the world they actually mean it. Without dogs, we might not of have caught dozens of criminals, some animals could be extinct, and we might not of won wars! You know dogs can do more than just cuddle.

Service dogs

Rember my last blog post when I talked about dogs being helpful? Well for this post I'm going to get more into detail about that. Those dogs who help people are called service dogs. There also dogs who help the police, but we'll talk about working dogs later. Service dogs can service the blind, deaf, and many more like emotional support. But you have to train a dog to be a service dog first. A service dog and a service dog in training can go everywhere to as long as it has the official vest so you don't have to worry about not having your service dog around. FUN FACT: a dog that helps the blind is called a guide dog. Guide dog in action Here's a cool video about a guide dog:   https://youtu.be/mIlgnxFc3Lc
